In 1943, Missouri went back to issuing a single license plate due to the metal shortage during WWII (with a metal "tab" for 1943) and then the State went back to pairs of license plates from 1972 to the present. From 1918 to 1942, a pair of license plates was issued. From 1911 to 1917, a single license plat was issued. Missouri first started issuing license plates in 1911.
